ABOUT GERALD STEYN
Most architects focus on what they are essentially trained to do, which is to design buildings. This is certainly one of my activities. In fact, supervising and managing complex master’s level design projects unquestionably honed my design proficiency, and greatly expanded my understanding of theoretical, technological and contextual issues.
However, my experiences during two decades in academia (as a research professor at the Tshwane University of Technology) and a decade on the council of the statutory body that regulates architecture (The South African Council for the Architectural Profession, or SACAP) combine to equip me, uniquely, with two skills that relate to architecture, but go beyond design.
the ability to carry out research, and
the knowledge to identify and solve construction and contractual problems.
My rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF) means that I am considered an established researcher, and that I have demonstrated the ability to conceptualise problems and apply research methods to investigating them. Most successful architects accept that good research in the pre-design, or early-design, stages may often substantially enhance the quality and value of a design.
I am extremely fortunate that my two terms as a councillor of SACAP exposed me to every conceivable construction and contractual complaint imaginable. Informed by experience, I subsequently developed professional practice courses for the Pretoria Institute for Architecture’s CPD programmes. This exposure and involvement now allow me to independently investigate and resolve all kinds of failures and threats encountered in the building industry.
These skills can be applied directly to many issues, intrinsic to architectural projects and the building industry, that need rigorous investigation and resolution.
